Anointing of the Sick is the sacrament administered to those who are sick or nearing death. It hopes for physical strengthening and spiritual preparation for death should it be near. One can receive the Anointing of the Sick several times in ones life. Undergoing a big surgery and ask for this Sacrament just in case if anything fails they would have a clean conscience. Or having a serious illness at the point of death. It imparts peace and strength and unites the sick person with Christ. The minister of the sacrament is a priest or a bishop. The form of Anointing of the sick is the prayer of the priest or bishop over the sick person for the grace of the holy spirit and the forgiveness of sins. The matter is the anointing with the Holy Oil and the Imposition of hands. The effects of the Sacrament include that sins will be forgiven and grace to face death and judgement. Also can have preparation to die and if God's will, physical healing. The rite of this sacrament is first the introductory rights which include; greeting, sprinkling with holy water, instruction and the sacrament of penance. Next is the Liturgy of the Word which includes a reading and a response. The Liturgy of the Anointing has the litany, laying on of the hands, prayer over the oil, anointing, prayer after anointing, and the Lord's prayer. The Liturgy of the Eucharist follows after and in this there is communion, silent prayer and the prayer after communion. Lastly, is the concluding rite or blessing. Anointing of the Sick is called for as many times as one person needs. Young people can also ask for this sacrament, for example, if they are about to undergo a major surgery. Many Catholics combine the Anointing of the sick with a general confession just in case the operation fails, they can meet God with a clear conscience. Also many sick people are afraid of this sacrament because they see it as a death sentence. Even though many people see it like this it is not like it, its more like a life insurance because it insures peace, consolation and strength. There are many examples of Anointing of the Sick in Scripture. One includes "And they cast out many demons, and anointed with oil many that were sick and healed them," -Mark 6:13. Another is in James 5:14-15, "Is any among you sick? Let hi, call or the elders of the church, and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord; and the prayer of faith will save man, and the Lord will raise him up and if he has committed sins, he will be forgiven. Lastly, Mark 16:18, "they will pick up snakes with their hands, and if they drink any deadly poison, it will not harm them; they will lay their hands on the sick, and they will be made well." There are many more examples throughout the Bible. The mercy of God relates to Anointing of the Sick because God sees our sin. He is ready to forgive us because Jesus fully took OUR sin on Himself and paid for our sin by His death on the cross. Our sin is serious and it cost Jesus incredible suffering. But from the moment we received Christ into our lives, His forgiveness is ours.
